South Iceland (part 2): Waterfalls, a plane wrack, rock formations, glaciers and ice bergs

Iceland has not too many summer months but it has plenty of water and beautiful waterfalls. Even such waterfalls you can walk behind. Which we did of course, but only with rain gear *smiley laughing* . It is amazing how much water is thundering down the cliffs…

Of course, lunch is always where you get hungry. And most of the times, there is a very nice scenery around, of course always in the “table at the window” – even if there is no window *smiley winking*

As a surprise I told Thorsten to turn right at a little track in the middle of nowhere…

We drove for about 4km across the stone dessert and voila, there it was… a plane wreck from the 70s. A US military transport aircraft crashed there, nobody was hurt but the Americans just left the wrack where it was. Nowadays, this looks quite weird as the last 40 years did their part.

The glacier is also nearby – no, actually there are plenty of glaciers around… We went for a short walk to a glacier with a lagoon you can walk up to the glacier – actually also take a tour on the glacier but with a tour which we did not do as the weather was quite rainy, cold and ugly. Nevertheless – the views on the glacier is very nice. Some views are really black in white in nature when the sky is cloudy. It looks already photoshoped. Just imagine how it would look like with the sun shining…

Near Vik – all still on the south coast – there are really nice stone formations. Some are like pinnacles in the see – no, they are not just stones. Some trolls did not come back in time and the sun was rising already therefore they got petrified… Joke aside; it is just a stunning landscape.

Also extremely interesting and even more unique (there are yellow apostles on the great ocean road in Australia…) are the hexagonally shaped basalt columns. Just standing at the beach – like a piece of art… And the beach is black. Not dark, it is pitch black. And the kid’s sandbox is subsequently filled with black sand, too *smiley winking* Another formation which reminded us of Australia was the stone bridge. Just like the one at the great ocean road. But not yet crashed and we gave it a try and walked over it…

It’s always good to find a nice, a bit more remote spot for the night what we did when choosing Thankgil. Sitting in a valley 15km away from the ring road via a 4wheel drive road, it not only an extremely nice drive to get there (the views are really gorgeous), the night is quiet and peaceful. Only the little river next to the tent might be a bit disturbing at night making you get out of the tent in the need to walk to the toilet hut… But also here it is about watching the time to go to bed somewhen – at midnight the light is still like at 9pm in a German summer….
